In this post we take you all the way to 600 in blacksmithing in the wonderful grindfest that is World of Warcraft
In this post we take you all the way to 600 in blacksmithing in the wonderful World of Warcraft. Late one night I’m playing a game with the editing director of Nerfed, when he announces with much gusto “I’ve come up with an idea!”. Now usually when I hear something like this it fills me with fear but beings as this came from the boss I had to feign interest. He continues by saying “You know how you’re a complete geek when it comes to crafting in MMO’s?” “Erm, yes?” I reply worrying where this conversation is going; “Well why don’t you do a crafting guide for all the MMO’s out there?” Interesting idea, I suppose!
So I’ve decided to start with World of Warcraft, as this is where I spent most of my MMO days and where I have done the most crafting. Whilst I am working on these posts I will get to grips with the crafting systems in other MMO’s like SWTOR, Rift and others.
To start your journey on the path to Zen blacksmithing in WoW, you will need to speak to a trainer in any main city and learn apprentice blacksmithing. If you’re not sure where to find the trainer just ask any guard, they will point you in the right direction.
If you’re going to work your way to 600 in blacksmithing then you are going to need a lot of ingredients. Of course you can buy these from the Auction House, but that’s going to cost you a lot of money. The best way to do this is to mine your own materials, but this will entail a lot of work for you. However to make this a little easier each time you need to mine a new material, I will post a good mining route for you.
Here are your first mining routes that will help you mine copper.
Undead – Tirisfal Glades – The undead path for mining copper is fairly simple. You can pick a starting point anywhere on the line and just run the path mining along the way. If you are low level you may want to take into consideration areas on the map that might be too high for you to cross, if that is the case then just skip them and meet up with the path further down while levelling your mining.
Tauren – Mulgore – Mulgore is just a big oval so this mining route is really simple to run while levelling. Mob levels and aggro are not that important of a factor since you’ll be sticking to the outer edges of the map, so you should be fine following this path. You may want to skip levelling mining in the Venture Co Mine if you are too low of a level.
Orc & Troll – Durotar - Durotar is full of mountains and you could probably develop your own mining route if this one doesn’t work for you. I will let you know upfront that Durotar is a deformed piece of land and you would have to run all over the place to utilize a full mining circuit of it, which can be tedious while levelling.
Blood Elves – Eversong Woods – This route is the simplest route to follow. There are other mines near West Sanctum and West of Sunsail Anchorage, but if you’re looking for simplicity this is the route to take. The Deadscar is loaded with mines so if you get bored of going in circles I’ve added a point you can break off at halfway through.
Goblins – Azshara – Goblins have several options of where to go to mine, Azshara is one of them and can be done for some of the other Horde races as well if you choose. The route stays up on the plateau and does a full loop around it. The red circle on the map is where you can sit and go nuts on copper ore, as there are at least 7 nodes in that area that will spawn.
Human – Elwynn Forest – This one is kind of obvious since Elwynn forest is surrounded by mountains on all 4 sides. There are two caves to go into and if you run the alternate dotted line from time to time there are more nodes down the river near the Tower of Azora.
Night Elves & Worgen – Darkshore – Darnassus isn’t great for mining, so you have to come to Darkshore to level it up. Darkshore is a huge zone, there are nodes scattered all off to each side of this route. The southern half is a higher level range so do half circles of the route, if that is an issue.
Dwarves & Gnomes – Dun Morogh – This is a route I’ve used many times for levelling up my mining. You can literally make your own mining levelling route in this zone because it is so mountainous. Just stick to the mountain edges, caves, and rises in land and you’ll be set to mine in this zone as shown in the zone mining map guide below.
Draenei – Azuremyst Isle – There are two caves on this route that you’ll want to have a poke around in. If you are low enough level to get experience in the cave to the north you could basically just sit in there and grind / mine at the same time. If not then follow the entire route. There’s kind of a dead spot transition while going to the next good area when you go passed the lakes but it’s that or loop back the way you came, either is fine.
1-30 33 x Rough Sharpening Stone you will need 33 rough stone for this
30-65 50 x Rough Grinding Stones you need 100 rough stone here, also it’s a good idea to keep these after you have made them for later use.
65-75 10 x Copper Chain Belt for this you’ll need 60 copper bars. Now you will need to return to your trainer and learn Journeyman blacksmithing.
75-90 40 x Coarse Grinding Stone you’ll need 80 Coarse Stone for this. Save these for later on, if you have extra coarse stone available or you find it cheap on the AH. You can use this to get you to level 100 and skip the next step.
90-105 10 x Runed Copper Belt you’ll need 100 copper bars for this step.
105-110 5 x Runed Copper Belt 50 copper bars are needed for this. It’s at this point that you will need to start farming for Tin and Silver ore as you will need the Tin ore to make Bronze Bars.
Hillsbrad Foothills - This zone, which was combined with Alterac Mountains in Cataclysm, now has one of the densest areas of Tin Ore ever noted on any map. By staying in the red zone and going in the caves you will find a very large supply of nodes. Take a trip out of the area and run around the outskirts of the mountains if you get bored.
Ashenvale - This route is more spread out than the above Hillsbrad route, but still a viable option for Tin Ore. Stay away from the northeast section as it’s mostly Copper Ore up there. Stick to the internal ridges.
110-125 15 x Rough Bronze Shoulders 75 Bronze Bars and 15 Coarse Grinding Stones
At this point you will have to go back to the trainer and learn Blacksmithing Expert.
125-140 35 x Heavy Grinding Stone you’ll need a massive 105 Heavy Stone for this. Make sure to keep hold of your Heavy Grinding Stones for later use and if you have enough heavy stones, then it might be worth trying to get to 150
140-145 5 x Rough Bronze Shoulders for this you’ll need 25 Bronze Bars and 5 Coarse Grinding Stones
145-155 10 x Patterned Bronze Bracers 50 Bronze Bars and 20 Coarse Grinding Stones Now it’s on to the Iron and Gold farming routes. So here are your new maps.
Feralas - This zone is loaded with Iron Ore and is probably the best zone to get it now, thanks to changes to the zone from Cataclysm. Do a loop in the north and run some of the outskirts in the southern regions west of Camp Mojache.
Western Plaguelands - In this zone you’ll find a relatively simple and easy route to follow. Just doing an outskirt circuit of the map without going too far north or doing anything internally should be a pretty sufficient route to net enough Iron Ore on each trip around.
The Cape of Stranglethorn – This is my least favourite spot of the three to mine Iron Ore, but it’s likely one of the best to find this ore. There are a few nodes out on Jaguero Isle and then by coming back across to the gorilla area and naga area you will net some Iron Ore. If you’re going to try this route though be prepared to get ganked.
155-165 10 x Green Iron Leggings 80 Iron Bars, 10 Heavy Grinding Stone and 10 Green Dye. Green Dye is sold by Tailoring and Leatherworking supply vendors.
165-190 25x Green Iron Bracers 150 Iron Bars and 25 Green Dye
190-200 10 x Golden Scale Bracers 50 Steel Bars and 20 Heavy Grinding Stones For the next section of Blacksmithing your going to need to mine some Mithril Ore so here’s the next route for you.
Felwood – This is an easy route to follow as long as you don’t mind running through a lot of enemies while doing it. This route should net you the most Mithril Ore, and is almost a complete loop of the outskirts of the zone.
Badlands – Here you’ll probably want to spend most of your time in the eastern loop or in the cave in the southwest. It’s not bad to alternate between the two spots, but the eastern loop and south-western cave are where you will level mining the fastest.
Burning Steppes – Dreadmaul Rock is loaded with caves full of Mithril Ore, you could spend all day just going in and out of the caves on the red spot but you’ll have to be dismounted most of the time and fight your way through some of the enemies. For a more peaceful route take the outskirt arrows.
Blacksmithing 200 – 300
20 x Solid Sharpening Stones 20 Solid Stones
15 x Heavy Mithril Gauntlet 90 Mithril Bars and 60 Mageweave cloth
10 x Mithril Scale Bracers 80 Mithril Bars
The recipe for Mithril Scale Bracers is sold by these NPCs. There’s about a 30 min respawn rate on these plans so if somebody has just bought them you might find you have to wait a little while.
Check the AH here, if you can find a recipe for Mithril Spurs and it’s cheap enough then go with this up to 255 if not the go with the following
15 x Mithril Coif 150 Mithril Bars and 90 Mageweave Cloths
20 x Dense Sharpening Stones 20 Dense Stone
Now it’s time to move onto Thorium, so here are your new routes.
Keep in mind that Small Thorium Veins require a skill of 230 but you won’t be able to mine the Rich Thorium Veins till 255.
Winterspring – This is one of the best spots for Thorium hands down. Do this small loop and go into the yeti caves, or don’t do this loop at all and go to the northern part and run the edges. There’s Thorium everywhere!
Silithus - This is another good zone to farm Thorium Ore in. Go into the caves of the hives if the big circle gets too boring. If you don’t want to drop into the tunnel systems there is still a decent amount of Thorium if you just perform the circuit indicated on the map.
Blasted Lands – This zone has a few good routes for Thorium Ore. The section in the southwest has both Small Thorium and Rich Thorium Veins.
15 x Thorium Bracers 120 Thorium Bars
15 x Imperial Plate Bracers 180 Thorium Bars
For this section you have a choice. They both require 12 Thorium Bars to craft; the only difference between them is that you need 1 Star Ruby for the Helm and 8 Rugged Leather for the Boots. So pick the one you prefer.
10 x Thorium Boots 120 Thorium Bars and 80 Rugged Leather
10 x Thorium Helm 120 Thorium Bars and 10 Star Rubies’
Blacksmithing 300 – 350
Your going to need to start mining Fel Iron Ore now so here’s some new routes for you.
Hellfire Peninsula - For this section you can just loop around the orcs near the citadel but if you follow the entire levelling route around the mining map it will also be beneficial. Watch out for the elites in the northwest area and there are some other crowded areas like the Pools of Agonnar that can be a headache while levelling. Remember Fel Iron can be used to skill up all the way to 375+ if you wish and you can skip the other sections of this levelling guide.
So it’s back to the trainer again and now it’s time to learn Blacksmithing Master.
7 x Fel Weightstone 7 Fel Iron Bars and 7 Netherweave Cloth
10 x Fel Iron Plate Belts 40 Fel Iron Bars
5 x Fel Iron Chain Gloves 25 Fel Iron Bars
5 x Fel Iron Plate Boots 30 Fel Iron Bars
So that’s it done with Fel Iron! Nice and short. Now it’s on to Adamantite Ore, so here’s your next route
Nagrand – From 325-350 continue mining Fel Iron when possible, but begin to look for the non-rich Adamantite Deposits which become available for mining at skill 325. The best Adamantite mining zone is Nagrand where there is Adamantite Deposits as far as the eye can see. Start by performing a full-circuit as shown below and then move into the inner water areas if those are camped or you prefer a change while levelling.
10 x Lesser Rune Of Warding 10 Adamantite Bars
If you have enough Adamantite, or it’s cheap on your server, you can keep making this till you hit 335
5 x Fel Iron Breastplate 50 Fel Iron Bars
Blacksmithing 350 – 425
Now we’re flying through the blacksmithing ranks you will need to go back to the trainer and learn Blacksmithing Grand Master.
Also it’s time to move on to farming Cobalt Ore and rich Cobalt ore, so here’s your new routes.
Howling Fjord – Remember you must be at least 350 to start mining the regular Cobalt nodes, the Rich Cobalt nodes require 375 mining. You can actually take Rich Cobalt to 450 for levelling if you wanted to (just like Fel Iron in Hellfire Peninsula for TBC)
Zul’Drak – There will be more Rich Cobalt Nodes in Zul’Drak if you are interested in levelling your skill beyond 400 on Rich Cobalt.
10 x Cobalt Boots 40 Cobalt Bars
10 x Cobalt Triangle Shield 40 Cobalt Bars
5 x Cobalt Legplates 25 Cobalt Bars
5 x Cobalt Gauntlets 25 Cobalt Bars
5 x Spiked Cobalt Boots 35 Cobalt Bars
5 x Spiked Cobalt Shoulders 35 Cobalt Bars
5 x Notched Cobalt War Axe 50 Cobalt Bars
Although you will still be using Cobalt, it’s time to start looking at Saronite Ore so here are the new routes. Obviously at this level you will notice the next two routes are in serious PvP areas (WinterGrasp especially) so you can expect some fights for nodes.
Wintergrasp - Wintergrasp is the best zone for farming Saronite. The respawn rate is fast and there are a lot of Rich Saronite Deposits. The only disadvantage is that you can’t use flying mount when the battle for Wintergasp is in progress.
Sholazar Basin - You must be 425 to mine Rich Saraonite, you will find Titanium Veins along the way but you must be 450 to mine Titanium. Sholazar Basin is a miner’s heaven due to its structure. If you could get one of the pillars to yourself you could farm / kill mobs for exp while working your mining up. If can’t get a pillar to yourself then stick to the outer rim of the map.
5 x Brilliant Saronite Belt - 30 Colbalt Bars and 25 Saronite Bars
5 x Horned Cobalt Helm - 40 Cobalt Bars
5 x Brilliant Saronite Boots - 132 Saronite Bars
5 x Tempered Saronite Gauntlets - 70 Saronite Bars
5 x Titanium Weapon Chain - 10 Saronite Bars and 5 Titanium Bars
As said above, Sholazr Basin is a good place to mine for Titanium so you should have already been picking some of this up. Alchemists can transmute 8 Saronite Bars into 1 Titanium Bar if you know an Alchemist, also this transmute does not have a cooldown.
Blacksmithing 425 – 500
Time for another trip to your trainer so you can learn Blacksmithing Illustrious
In this part you will notice that some items will require more materials than other possible options. The reason I have done this is if you don’t mass produce and item it is easier to sell it on the AH (and you really should as your going to need all the money you can get)
Now we are at 425 in blacksmithing we need to start mining Obsidium.
Mount Hyjal – For me this is the only place to get your Obsidium, as the other option is underwater and I HATE underwater mining. By all means if you like to play underwater try those zones out instead, but I found this to be more in line with the traditional way of mining.
83 x Folded Obsidium - 166 Obsidium Bars. Yes I know that’s a lot, but WoW is all about the grind my friend
Make 4 from any recipe that requires 3 Folded Obsidium. Plenty of choices here so knock yourself out.
Almost all of the following items will give you MULTIPLE skill ups per craft.
1 x Stormforged Gauntlets - 6 Folded Obsidium and 8 Volatile Earth
Make 8 from any of the following Items
1 x Obsidium Bladespear - 12 Folded Obsidium, 6 Volatile Earth and 4 Volatile Fire
1 x Cold-Forged Shank - 15 folded Obsidium, 6 Volatile Earth and 4 Volatile Water
Now we need to move on to farming Elementium Ore so here are two more routes for you.
Deepholm – You must be 475 to mine Elementium. The best zone for Elementium is probably Deepholm. It’s a pretty straightforward route and has a cave marked in red that you can go into for more nodes.
Twilight Highlands - This is a pretty simple route, personally I found it a bit boring but it’s all personal preference.
3 x Stormforged Legguards - 6 Folded Obsidium and 24 Elementium Bars
1 x Fire Etched Dagger - 20 Elementium Bars, 12 Volatile Earth and 4 Volatile Fire
2 x Stormforged Helm - 40 Elementium Bars and 16 Volatile Earth
Blacksmithing 500 – 600
For the last time you need to head back to your trainer and learn Zen Blacksmithing.
It’s time to farm Ghost Iron Ore so here is your last route. You’re almost there!
Jade Forest - Ghost Iron Ore is simply everywhere here. If you want your skill maxed fast you can mine all the way to 600 with ghost iron ore and never have to move to a new zone. Keep in mind at 595 normal Ghost Iron Ore will go grey, but you can get skill up from Rich Ghost Iron Deposits.
500 – 501
1 X Ghostly Skeleton Key - 1 Ghost Iron Bar
This is an important step, so don’t skip it!
5 x Ghostly-Forged Bracers - 25 Ghost Iron Bars
4 x Ghost-Forged Boots - 28 Ghost Iron Bars
1 x Lightsteel Shield - 9 Ghost Iron Bars
2 x Spiritguard Shield - 18 Ghost Iron Bars
12 x Ghost-Forged Shoulders - 84 Ghost Iron Bars
Once you reach 575 you can purchase vendor recipes for the last 25 points. The Blacksmithing recipes can be found with a vendor in Vale of Eternal Blossoms. You can enter Vale of Eternal Blossoms after completing the quest A Celestial Experience (requires level 87). After you completed the quest, you can find Jorunga Stonehoof (Horde) in Shrine of Two Moons and Cullen Hammerbrow(Alliance) in Shrine of Seven Stars.
You’ll need 1 Spirit of Harmony to purchase a recipe and you only need one recipe. You can get Spirit of Harmony by combining 10 Motes of Harmony. Motes are dropped by every mob in Pandaria, even in dungeons. The drop rate is low, so it may take you 2 hours to collect 10 motes.
Choose one recipe from the Contender’s Armor recipes. It doesn’t matter which one because if one of them requires more Ghost Iron Bars, it will give you more skill points. You will need between 58 and 64 Ghost Iron Bars.
Well that’s everything. We hope this has helped you on your way to Zen Blacksmithing. Keep an eye out for future crafting 101 articles.
